This Is Our God

This is our God. In one of his sermons, the late pastor James Montgomery Boice referred to a Chinese evangelist, Leland Wong, who put at the top of his letterhead, “The sun stood still. The iron floats. This God is our God.” These references to incidents in the Old Testament (Joshua 10:13 and 2 Kings 6:6) remind us that God is a God of miracles. Nothing is too difficult for Him. He may manifest His presence in different ways now, but He is not limited in what He can do.

Whatever situation we are facing, it is wise to remember who God is in the midst of it.

God identified Himself to Moses as I AM ( “I AM WHO I AM.” Exodus 3:14 ESV)

I AM. God is all-sufficient. He Is. He abundantly fills every need we have. In an unstable, ever changing world, He is our Rock, our solid, secure, unchanging foundation. In times of discouragement, He is our Comforter. In our confusion, He is our Good Shepherd who guides us. In times of sickness, He is our Healer. In a world filled with deceit, He is the Truth. In a world that has apparently lost its way, and has veered very far off course, He is the Way.

When darkness takes hold of our culture, He is the Light of the world. In a world that hungers and thirsts for meaning and purpose, He is the Bread of Life and Living Water. When we feel alone, He is the God who sees us. When fears assail us, he is our Refuge and Strength, a Mighty Fortress, our Strong Tower, our Hiding Place.

When we feel unsettled, He is our Peace. He is our Provider and Sustainer. He is El Shaddai, Almighty God. Whatever we need, He is the answer. When we have questions, He is All-knowing. He is Wisdom.

He is the Creator of the universe. He knows every hair on our heads. He knew all the days ordained for us before any of them came to be. He is Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. He knows the end from the beginning. He holds the future. He is so much more than we can even imagine. We only see the tiniest glimpse of Him and His power.

An enemy seeks to destroy everything God intended for good. We see the effects of the conflict all around us. But God is directing history, and everything is falling into place according to His plan and purpose. The outcome is certain.

Knowing who God is enables us to trust Him. I find peace and security in knowing that He is sovereignly in control of all things. Nothing is outside of His reach. He has perfect understanding and He is perfect in all of His ways. In Him we find perfect rest. He is the Author and Finisher of our faith. Those who turn to Him in faith know He is our Hope. He is the only Hope of the world. This is our God. If the world only knew.

Will we tell them?

Who can be compared with the Lord our God, who is enthroned on high? Psalm 113:5

Phyllis
