In The Beginning God

In the beginning God. These four simple words explain everything. Everything starts there. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. He spoke the universe into being. In so doing, He revealed nothing is impossible for Him. He spoke, and created everything out of nothing.

These simple words show us Almighty God is the source and the power behind all that is.
The first words of the Bible are the foundation for the rest of it. They are the foundation of our faith. When we believe the all-powerful God created the heavens and the earth, and everything in them, we can trust His ability to handle any situation that confronts us.

God designed the earth to sustain life. Science reveals the genius of God’s creation. Just consider the position of the earth. Its distance from the sun, the degree of its tilt, and the number of revolutions around the sun each year are all designed to sustain life. If any of it was off, none of us would be here. If the earth was closer to the sun we would not be able to withstand the heat. If further away, we would freeze. We enjoy the exact proportion of oxygen and other gasses to breath easily. A different arrangement would either burn up at the first spark or suffocate us. Plants have seeds to reproduce. The amount of water covering the earth is just the right amount to create the rainfall we need. More or less would lead to catastrophic drought or flooding. To believe these things just happened by accident takes more faith than to believe in Creator God.

The God who designed and sustains the universe in all its complexity can do anything. We should have no doubt, when we gaze at what He has already done. The miracles reported in the Bible shouldn’t surprise us. God opened the Red Sea (Exodus 14). He spoke through a donkey (Numbers 22:28). He supplied food for Elijah by sending ravens to carry bread and meat to him (1 Kings 17).

God can heal any disease. He can right any wrong. In His perfect time He will make everything right. If He doesn’t heal or fix in the moment, He has something greater planned. When He didn’t heal Lazarus, the mourners saw a resurrection (John 11). God let Shadrach, Meshack and Abednego go into the fiery furnace, but walked in it with them and then brought them out unharmed (Daniel 3).

God gives us life, and sustains it. The greatest miracle is the new life He gives when people turn to Him in faith. By His Spirit, God transforms sinners into saints. He removes pride, selfishness, anger, hatred, lying, and lust from human hearts and replaces these things with the ability to seek righteousness.

The God who can do all of that surely knows what to do with all the issues we face–whether big or small from our perspective.

A quote recently came to my attention. I don’t know the origin. “Everything will be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.” God is always working. If in our individual stories we are experiencing disarray, it just means God isn’t finished. He has a good plan for all of His creation, and He is working it out. We only see some of the pieces coming together. We don’t see the end yet. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. When we see what He is arranging for our future, the result will be unceasing praise, throughout eternity.

The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to make him known. Psalms 19:1-2 NLT

How are you encouraged to know God created the heavens and the earth out of nothing? Please leave a comment below.

Blessings,
Phyllis

I really needed this today. I have accepted only God can help my adult daughter and am at peace with that.

Very well thought out and very well written, Phyllis. Thanks for the reminder that God works out everything for my good (because I’m called according to His purpose) and for His glory.

    Hi Phyllis!
I had not ever heard that quote “Everything will be ok in the end. If it isn’t ok, it isn’t the end.” I have had a number of opportunities to share it with others whom I felt might need to hear it and be reassured of God’s control in their lives. Thank you for sharing it!
