Father’s Day

Father’s Day–a day to honor the men entrusted with the leadership and care of their families. Many take the responsibility seriously. They work hard to provide for, protect, and nurture their children. They do the best they can. Whatever our relationship may be with our earthly fathers, there is a Father in heaven who is perfect.

The Bible uses many terms to help us understand the nature of God. He is our Creator. The world originated by His power and design. He is our Redeemer. It is only by His gracious sacrifice on the cross that we can be forgiven for all the ugliness of sin. He is our Protector, our Provider, our Counselor, our Healer, and so much more.

Of all the words the Bible uses to describe God, one of the most meaningful is “Father.” God is not distant and uncaring, He is present and involved in His children’s lives. He cares for us as a loving parent. He lavishes love on us by calling us His children (1 John 3:1).

He knows our frailty, He understands our weaknesses. The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him. For he knows how weak we are; he remembers we are only dust (Psalm 103:13-14 NLT). He cares about us intimately. He even keeps track of the number of hairs on each person’s head (Luke 12:7).

Human fathers like to give good gifts to their children. Much more so, our Heavenly Father gives good things to those who ask Him (Matthew 7:11). All good gifts ultimately come to us by His generosity (James 1:17).

Our Father God gives wisdom and trains us in righteousness through His Word. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right (2 Timothy 3:16 NLT). He disciplines us through the consequences of our bad decisions. For the Lord disciplines those he loves (Hebrews 12:6 NLT).

God is constant in His care. He is a father to the fatherless, and a defender of widows (Psalm 68:5 ). Though earthly parents may shirk their responsibilities and forsake their children, God never will (Psalm 27:10).

God showers His love and gracious provision on all people (Matthew 5:45) but He is only Father to those who come to Him by faith through the Lord Jesus. Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6 NLT). Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God (John 1:12 NLT).

If you don’t know God as Father, turn to Him, and ask Him to make you His child. Whoever will, may come to Him For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16NLT).

Father’s Day is an appropriate time to celebrate fathers who care for their families through their love, hard work, and sacrifice. It’s a good reminder that our parents are worthy of our respect every day. It’s even more important to remember and thank our Heavenly Father. He cares for us every moment of our lives, and throughout eternity. He is a loving Father, who delights in His children.

For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs. Zephaniah 3:17

    Phyllis,

This is a meaningful overview of Scripture about fathers. You gave good insights. The quote from Psalm 103:13 spoke to me. “He knows how weak we are.” Many dedicated fathers call out to God for direction and for strength. That can make all the difference. May this Father’s Day bring new awareness to men everywhere as to their calling as fathers.
