Timeless. Some of the terms used to describe God and His word are eternal, everlasting, and imperishable. What is eternal can never be out of date. It is timeless, for all times, and for all people. Yet, the Bible is under attack as outdated or irrelevant.
In the beginning God (Genesis1:1). Everything starts there. The One who created everything has all knowledge and authority. The universe and whatever lies beyond runs by His enabling, and according to His plans. Though written over the course of 1500 years, by 40 different men, the Author is God Himself. The writers reflect their individual personalities and culture, but God’s Spirit spoke (and speaks) through them. The Bible is remarkably consistent because it is God’s word to His people. The Bible reveals God’s character. It provides insights into what God wants us to know of His plans. It provides instructions for how we should live.
Attacks on the Bile are not new. From the beginning, Satan has resisted God’s authority and caused humankind to doubt God’s word. Throughout history, the attack has continued. The song varies somewhat for every generation, but the refrain is the same, “Did God really say?”
But the Bible proves true, despite all the efforts to discredit it. Some claim the Bible is not scientific. Scientific theories change, and science can only discover what God designed in the first place. For instance, the Bible described the earth as a circle and suspended in space long before science confirmed those facts (Isaiah 40:22 and Job 26:7).
The future fulfillment of many Bible prophecies require Israel to be a nation. The people of Israel were scattered in 70 AD after Rome besieged and destroyed Jerusalem. Many voices said those prophecies would never be fulfilled because Israel was no longer a nation. In 1946, someone wrote a book which attacked the truth of the Bible. The book listed all the reasons Israel could never become a nation again. But God had a different plan. One year later, a U.N. resolution designated land for Israel. And on May 14, 1948 Israel was again established as a nation, in the land God gave to Israel in Genesis 12. No other nation in history has been dissolved as a nation, then re-established.
That and other prophecies already fulfilled affirm the truth of the rest of the Bible.
Today, cultural voices try to tell us God’s word doesn’t apply to this generation. People try to bend the commandments in the Bible to accommodate what is accepted in the culture. Satan still whispers, “Did God really say?”
Jesus is coming back. The Bible tells us to live expectant of His return. The condition of the world tells us history is drawing to a close. God will have the last word about what is true.
Truth endures. It is timeless.
Your word, Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Psalm 119:89 NIV
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2 NIV
